Jazz in the Suburbs

14 Nov

Last evening Domenica and I went to see Lisa Engelken perform. It’s a bit of a convoluted set of circumstances that brought us there. Lisa grew up in DC, moved to NYC and most recently has been living in San Francisco. Vince, who lives in San Leandro, has been taking private Italian lessons from Lisa. I don’t know how she learned Italian well enough to teach it, but teach it she does. Vince told us Lisa would be performing at a private club in the DC area. So private that we didn’t find out the address until the day before the performance. It was in a spectacular private residence that hosts intimate concerts such as Lisa’s. As it turns out, Jody was visiting on the East Coast so we made arrangements to meet up with her and Gracie for dinner before we all headed out to the performance. Lisa is a fabulous performer with an engaging stage presence and an incredible vocal range. The club was very crowded with standing room only by the time we got there. We stood around for about an hour then reluctantly headed home, with weary feet and at least an hour drive ahead of us.
