A Sicilian Feast

26 Oct

Last Saturday was my birthday. I usually celebrate the occasion with my hubby, sisters, and sister-in-law Brenda at a restaurant, but this year my sister Domenica invited Brad, JoAnn and I to her house for the occasion. Then Domenica casually mentioned there would be a mystery guest in attendance. Someone from my past. I was intrigued. I tried to think who this person could be from my past who was also a friend of Domenica’s. I had a couple ideas of who it could be but, since I love surprises, I didn’t voice my guesses out loud.

We arrived at Domenica’s at the appointed time and upon entering her house were greeted with a wonderful aroma. The mystery guest was not immediately revealed. Domenica yelled into the rear corner of the house, “Mystery guest, say something to let Lenora know who you are!” A brief pause ensued. Then I heard a disembodied, yet all-too-familiar, voice say, “I used to tease you relentlessly when you were a kid.”

“‘Cenzo!” I yelled, using the moniker I now often apply to my brother Vince who lives near San Francicso. “You’re the mystery guest??” Indeed he was. I was utterly delighted and had been taken completely by surprise.

I was overwhelmed by the menu for the evening and couldn’t wait to sit down and partake of the following Sicilian delectables:
Caponata di Melanzana (Eggplant Appetizer)
Cavolfiore “Affogato” (“Drowned” Cauliflower)
Pasta di Farro con Olio, Aglio, Basilico e Pinoli (Farro Pasta with Olive Oil, Garlic, Basil and Pine Nuts)
Penne con Sugo Marinara (Penne with Marinara Sauce)
Insalata Caprese (Tomato and Mozzarella Salad)

When we got home that evening, I realized with regret that we hadn’t taken a single photo of the table laden with the skillfully prepared and artfully displayed dishes. But Vince had been taking photos while preparing the meal and provided me with a slideshow of the meal preparation in progress.

This was definitely a birthday to remember.
